Response to report on FC by ED

Report damaged LIC’s reputation

This is with reference to the article titled “Your Money, their lunch” (PM, Sep 20).
We take strong exception to your article, which in our view, has damaged the
reputation of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), an organisation that has
done yeoman service to its policy-holders and the country.
We also object to the manner in which your correspondent misrepresented himself,
promised to e-mail a questionnaire for getting authentic information from us and
then went ahead without sending the same or seeking further information or our
views in the matter.
The misuse of the name of the official spokesman to add credibility to the malicious
story is also reprehensible and highly unprofessional.
The article has also grievously hurt the sentiments of our thousands of dedicated
employees, while casting aspersions on their discipline and motivation.
The said meal coupon scheme is not very dissimilar to several meal coupon
schemes, high quality subsidized canteens, free lunch provisions or other such
schemes run by hundreds of companies in India, both in the private sector and also
in the public sector.
It is not a new or unique policy as such, nor does it set a new precedent, as
projected by your paper. The same is akin to any other facility provided by
enlightened employers worldwide and forms a part of the cost of the company, as
any other expense rather than ‘coming out of taxpayers’ pocket’.
The article creates an impression as if all the employees of the corporation are
coming late every day and that the management is a helpless bystander, which is
far from the truth.
The discipline in the organisation is one of the highest among public sector
institutions and the improving productivity of the employees over the years is a
testimony to this.
